Season and Hours

The Museum’s season is early June to late September, Tuesdays through Saturdays, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Alternatively you can go inside the Museum on Old Butte Historical Adventures’ East Tour.

Things to Know: The Museum buildings are not heated. On the hottest days of summer, it is blissfully cool inside, but for much of the rest of the year, including June, it can be quite chilly in the Museum. We have a small bathroom facility, which is not suited for large groups.

The Mai Wah Museum’s main season is early June through late September. We try to accommodate visitors at all other times throughout the year — you just need to contact us in advance so we can arrange for a guide to open for you. We try to do this for all interested parties, from individuals to groups. Three or four days (or more) advance notice will increase the chances that we can accommodate you.

In the off season, please call us at (406) 565-1826.

Tours

Tours are available to visitors when they arrive. For groups, please contact us to make advance arrangements. Individuals, families, and groups, including school groups, are accommodated all year long depending on the schedule of our volunteer docents. Three or four days’ (or more) advance notice will increase the chances that we can accommodate you.

Groups

For groups of 5 or more, including adult and school groups, the rate for admission with guided tour is $5.00 per person. Bus drivers and one leader are free. It is imperative that groups make arrangements in advance so that we can be sure to have a guide available. We also must know the number attending – for groups larger than 20 people, we need to arrange for two guides because of the sizes of our rooms.

Please complete this form before calling; you can also email the completed form to us.

Individual tourists may also visit the Mai Wah when it is closed as part of the East Tour provided by Old Butte Historical Adventures. Please call OBHA (406-498-3424) to schedule your tour and to ensure that a guide is available, especially during the winter season (October through April). (regular rate for entire tour, $18 per person).

Accessibility

The first floor of the Museum is wheelchair accessible. This includes the Butte Chinese Experience exhibit, the Wah Chong Tai Mercantile exhibit, and the Gift Shop. Unfortunately, our historic buildings are not accessible upstairs for wheelchairs. Contact us for accessibility questions.

Parking

Parking is usually easy to find on Mercury Street (often right in front of the Museum) or on Colorado Street half a block away. Even tour buses should have no problem parking close to the Museum. This area is unlimited free parking, so it can also serve as a starting point for walking through more of Uptown Butte a few blocks to the north (where most parking is metered or limited to two hours and strictly enforced).
